Revival of Knowledge in the Muslim World: Methodological Approaches

After having successfully conducted three Summer School Programs, such as “Transformation of Muslim World in the 21st century,’’, “State and Society in the Muslim World,”’ and ‘”Social Justice and Poverty in the Muslim World,” in the past years, the main theme of this year’s 4th ILEM International Summer School was “Revival of Knowledge in the Muslim World: Methodological Approaches.”
Muhammad Akram Khan, a pioneer in the effective use of Performance Auditing, is an Audit Professional with over 40 years' experience. He developed the Performance Auditing Methodology used by the Department of the Auditor General, Pakistan.
Wael B. Hallaq is a scholar of Islamic law and Islamic intellectual history. Hallaq’s writings have explored the structural dynamics of legal change in pre-modern law, and have recently been examining the centrality of moral theory to understanding the history of Islamic law and modern political movements.
He was born in Ankara in 1966 and completed studies at İstanbul Üniversitesi in the Department of Philosophy in 1989, his M.A. in the history of science in 1993, and his PhD in Philosophy. He focuses on the history and philosophy of mathematics in Islamic and Turkish History.

4th International ILEM Summer School which was held in Istanbul between 3-9 July, with the theme of “Revival of Knowledge in the Muslim World: Methodological Approaches” brought together more than 40 academics from 11 different countries.
International ILEM Summer School program hosted many academicians from various regions of the Muslim geography, scholars shared ideas about the reproduction of knowledge in Islam from different disciplines and perspectives.
The program organized by the Scientific Studies Association (ILEM), Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB) and supported by Turkish Airlines, Mavera Education and Health Foundation and Istanbul Medeniyet University.
The first lesson of the summer school started with Prof. Dr. İhsan Fazlıoğlu under the headline of “Principle, Image, and System: An Introduction to the Structural Analysis of Philosophy- Science Schools in Islamic Civilization (Temeddün)”. The program continued with the lectures of key figures such as Wael B. Hallaq and Muhammad Akram Khan.
During the summer school, where academicians at the graduate level participated, 9 different workshops were also held and the participants shared their works with each other.
Throughout the 4th IISS social activities took place too and participants were able to pay close attention to the cultural heritage of Istanbul during the Historical Peninsula and Bosphorus tours. The program ended with the closing and certificate ceremony on 9 July, Sunday. Some of the proceedings that were presented in the Summer School are expected to be chosen and be published in the coming months, thus gaining a permanent value.
The digital versions of our publications, studies and information products are available for download free-of-charge. The texts and presentations that were introduced during the programs will be compiled and later printed as international books.
Besides the lectures will be given by the experts of the field, within the frame of the main theme of the program, there will be three workshops which contain presentations and debates to provide the content and aim of the school.

4. IISS Lecturers
He was born in Ankara in 1966 and completed studies at İstanbul Üniversitesi in the Department of Philosophy in 1989, his M.A. in the history of science in 1993, and his PhD in Philosophy. He conducted research at the University of Jordan (Amman) and the Arab Institute for the History of Science in Aleppo on the history of science and mathematics. He also worked as a researcher in the Department of Manuscripts at the International Research Center of Islamic Culture and Arts (IRCICA) from 1987-1996, including a period in Cairo during 1994. He focuses on the history and philosophy of mathematics in Islamic and Turkish History. Fazlıoğlu holds a teaching post at Istanbul Medeniyet University.
Mr. Muhammad Akram Khan, took post-graduate degrees from Pakistan (1966) and UK (1967) and joined Department of the Auditor General of Pakistan where he rose to the position of Deputy Auditor General (1999-2002). He served the UN Office of Internal Oversight from 2003-2007 as Chief Auditor of Peacekeeping Missions. He has consulted with UN, WB, OSCE, FAO, and Govt of Pakistan. He is a pioneer in the effective use of Performance Auditing with over 40 years’ experience as audit professional. He developed the Performance Auditing methodology used by the Department of the Auditor General, Pakistan. He has published 15 books and 46 research papers on various aspects of auditing and public finance. He pursues Islamic economics as a hobby and has published 20 books, 55 research papers and about 100 book reviews on various aspects of Islamic economics. His seminal work ‘What is Wrong with Islamic Economics: Analysing the Present State and Future Agenda’ was published by Edward Elgar (UK &USA) in 2013.
Wael B. Hallaq is a scholar of Islamic law and Islamic intellectual history. His teaching and research deal with the problematic epistemic ruptures generated by the onset of modernity and the socio-politico-historical forces subsumed by it; with the intellectual history of Orientalism and the repercussions of Orientalist paradigms in later scholarship and in Islamic legal studies as a whole; and with the synchronic and diachronic development of Islamic traditions of logic, legal theory, and substantive law and the interdependent systems within these traditions.
Hamid Dabashi is the Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. He received a dual Ph.D. in Sociology of Culture and Islamic Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. He wrote his dissertation on Max Weber’s theory of charismatic authority with Philip Rieff (1922-2006), the most distinguished Freudian cultural critic of his time. Professor Dabashi has taught and delivered lectures in many North American, European, Arab, and Iranian universities.
Dr. Muqtedar Khan is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware. He earned his Ph.D. in International Relations, Political Philosophy, and Islamic Political Thought, from Georgetown University in May 2000. He founded the Islamic Studies Program at the University of Delaware and was its first Director from 2007-2010.
Ozay Mehmet was born in 1938 in Nicosia, Cyprus into a Turkish Cypriot family. He studied at the London School of Economics between 1959 and 1962. Subsequently, he received his MA and PhD in economics at the University of Toronto on a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship. He has taught at various Canadian universities including: the University of Windsor, York University, the University of Toronto, the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. Mehmet is a specialist in economic development, with special reference to Asian Tigers, Turkey and Cyprus.
